        Acidity, heartburn, Pitta dosh, acidosis, GERD( gastro esophageal reflux disease ), all these words are used when you have Digestive imbalance and with or without regurgitation, and is a common condition or digestive discomfort see in people. 

      Along with this acidity, people may suffer from any one or more of symptoms -  indigestion, flatulence, dyspepsia, burning in chest or abdomen. 

        Our intestine that is gut consists of esophagus, stomach small intestine, large intestine etc., and when there is disturbances in their functions the out put is disturbed digestion. 

        And there are many symptoms and signs of this indigestion, such as salivation, abdominal pain, gaseous distention of abdomen, flatulence, and the most common is Acidity

        When we talk about digestion, Acid is that digestive fluid which enhances the digestive procedure. The stomach or intestine lining secrets these various acids like gastric acids, or gastric juice, or stomach acids. 

       These acids are needed to digest hard nutrients like proteins, and break down them into their smaller units i.e. amino acid. For this procedure acid activates some digestive enzymes for protein synthesis. 

         Generally, the excess acid secreted gets neutralized by the bicarbonates secreted by other cells of stomach and also of pancreas. But when there is either acid secretion disturbances or alkali secretion disturbances the result is generally called as Acidity

         After secretion from various cells, the acid reaches the stomach where it has to play its main role of digestion. This Acid secretion is stimulated when we eat our meal, and this meal when entre stomach, it stimulate the further secretion of various gastric acids. 

            This is what normally happens. But what happens when we name it as Acidity ? 

            Let's talk about the anatomy of our stomach. Stomach is bag like organ with two openings. The upper end and a lower end, similarly, esophagus has two openings, the lower end of esophagus is continue with the upper end of stomach. 

        The sphincter muscles at the lower end of the esophagus when relaxes food bolus enters the stomach and this sphincter gets closed up, but when this sphincter opens at wrong time, i.e. when it has to close, instead it opens, this allows the acid in the stomach to go back to esophagus and this results in the condition with various symptoms and sign called as Acidity

            These various sign and symptoms of Acidity are-  

  • Burning in chest, also called heartburn
  • Bloating of abdomen
  • Flatulence
  • Nausea and /or vomiting
  • Sour or bitter taste in mouth
  • Sour eructation
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Hiccup 
  • Heaviness after meal
  • Uneasy feeling or restlessness
  • Constipation or some times diarrhea 
  • Some may experience dry persistent cough with wheezing and dyspnea
  • Palpitation 
            When these symptoms are worse the condition is called as Hyperacidity , where generally there is chronic discomfort of abdomen especially upper abdomen. Hyperacidity may show bloody stool which is generally seen in gastric ulcer. 

            'What causes acidity' is the common question by patients. In the above paragraph we have seen that when the acid goes back in the esophagus, it causes Acidity. But the risk factors that are responsible for this condition are - 
  • most of the lifestyle changes like habit of smoking and alcohol,
  • Night watching,
  • Obesity
  • Lack of physical exercise'
  • Some medications,
  • Over drinking of coffee or tea,
  • Time difference between two meals,
  • Diet high in fats/oil, low in fibers, high in salt etc.,
  • Chocolate eating habit, habit of drinking much cold-drinks
  • other include some anatomical or physiological disorders.
If this condition remains untreated, then the person may has to face various complications such as - 
  • Esophagitis
  • Damage to stomach leading to scar formation called Stricture 
  • Gastric ulcers
But the condition is easily treatable especially at home with some home remedies. 
  • Avoid eating between the meals
  • Limit tea or coffee cups
  • Having some short dessert after meal can be helpful as it helps secret saliva
  • Avoid drinking the bottled up cold-drinks
  • Try to loose weight
  • Drink cup of cold milk before bedtime
  • Avoid drinking water during meal
