        Irritable Bowel Syndrome - IBS, is a group of symptoms, when your digestive system is not functioning properly. Generally, the condition is characterized with abdominal pain, distension and diarrhea or constipation.
          IBS is a chronic condition of colon, that results in long term abdominal discomfort and bloating. The condition is also known as nervous stomach and it does not cause serious health problem.

Structure & Function of Colon -
          Anatomically, in our body, large intestine i.e. colon can be divided into four parts -  ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid colon. 
            Important function of large intestine is to remove that food that is left after process of digestion. That part of food, from which nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. 
            Large intestine also absorbs water and minerals from the remaining food. Then the next function of colon is formation and transporting feces from sigmoid colon to rectum and to anal canal.
            Bacteria in the colon also protect intestine from harmful bacteria. 

Types -
           IBS - C :- Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation 
           IBS - D :- Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea
           IBS - M :- Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation and diarrhea
Causes - 
     Though the exact cause is unknown, many food can trigger the condition, such as spicy food. Similarly, irregular diet habit such as a long gap between two meals or frequent meals can be the main cause of irritable bowel syndrome. 
        Study suggests, psychological stress may trigger the irritability of bowels. Stress, excess workload, that disturb the digestion with symptoms of abdominal pain and discomfort.
        Excess use of stimulants like coffee or tea for a longer period of time, that may reduce appetite can result in IBS.
    In some cases, intolerance to some food may cause overactivity of colon muscles resulting in diarrhea.
     Some studies suggest, some bacterial infection can trigger the  condition with gastro-intestinal infection that is called as gastroenteritis.

Pathology of IBS - 
        In normal functioning colon muscle squeeze and relax to get rid of the remaining food from the intestine. In IBS, this activity is overpowered and this may results in either diarrhea or constipation.
       There may be abnormalities in the gut flora and this may result in inflammation or infection by various organisms like bacterial or viral infection.

Signs & Symptoms -
  • Important one is abdominal pain.
  • Bloating of abdomen.
  • Discomfort feeling in abdomen.
  • Frequent diarrhea or constipation.
  • Frequent desire to defecation.
  • Stool may contain mucus.
  • Cramps in lower abdominal region.
  • Poor or loss of appetite.
  • In cases with gastroenteritis there may be nausea and vomiting.
  • Extra tired feeling.
  • Burping that may be foul. 
  • Eating small can fulfil the appetite.
  • Acidity and heartburn.
