What Is Keloid?
Keloid is an abnormal proliferation of scar tissue, at the any incision or cut injury to skin, or a minor burn or an abrasion on skin. it appears with in 3 to 12 months, after any legion to skin. It is a keloid disorder. Not every forms keloid, only those person with this disorder, can have this scar.
It is growth of a type of granular tissue. These tissue extend beyond the wound boundaries. it is a Greek word 'cheloid' meaning crab claw. Generally with in a month after injury, the scar start to develop. It is an over-aggressive healing response to wound
Cause -
- Trauma, incision, abrasions, or burns
- Common in people with dark skin, in Africans, Asians
- Getting tattoo or piercing can cause keloid
- In some people, any insect bite or a shot for a vaccine can be the cause of appearance
- There are some spontaneous keloids, that are formed without any injury
- It can be hereditary, in about 20 to 30 % of cases, If parents or closed relative have keloid disordered, their relative or sibling can develop it
Pathology -
They generally, occur after a violent stimulus to skin such as any injury, cut, or burn. Keloids are tumors or collection of atypical fibroblasts, with excessive deposition of collagen, elastin, fibronectin, etc.
Exact mechanism of the keloid processing is yet to be fully understood. Similarly, keloids are common in dark skin people and specific demographic area, the reason behind this is not known.
Sign & Symptoms -
- Gradual appearance within a year is common,
- May appear quickly, and spread fast,
- Begins as a red or pink or purple spot,
- Gradually turns darker,
- It is soft and doughy to touch,
- It can grow three time larger with in a month,
- They can be fresh and nodular with recurrence after incision,
- Some are superficial spreading and flat keloid in butterfly appearance,
- Few of them are of non growing, or burned out keloid & they generally do not reappear after removal,
- Keloid can appear as a result of sever acne or even after chicken - pox,
- It may cause sometimes itching or pain or both,
- It can be easily irritated with cloth friction or touch or rubbing,
- On chest, keloid may be often tender.
- They can appear on from head to feet anywhere on skin,
- On ear, neck, shoulder, chest, back are common sites of its appearance
- Mostly, it is seen in person with neck surgery or in female with caesarian section.
