    Wrist is a joint that bridges the hand with the forearm. It is a complex joint. It is complex because there are multiple bones participating in the joint.
 
    Bones & Other Contents Of Wrist Joints -

    The joint comprises of bones from forearm, carpal bones and bones from hand. Two bones of forearm are radius and ulna. Bones of hand are metacarpal bones and two rows of eight small bones. 
      One row of four bones is attached to Radius and Ulna, these are Proximal Carpal Bones, and one row of four bones is of Distal Carpal Bones and is attached to bones of hands.
      Other than bones, wrist contains more other soft tissues such as ligaments, blood vessels, nerves, and tendons.

    Joints Of Wrist - 
  • Distal Radio-ulnar Joint - The lower end of the long bone of forearm Radius forms joint with the Lower end of the second long bone of forearm Ulna
  • Radio-Carpal Joint - The lower end of Radius forms joint with the carpal bones of wrist
  • Mid-Carpal Joint - The carpal bones form joint with one another
  • Carpo-metacarpal Joint - Carpo-metacarpal Joint of fingers - carpal bones connect to upper end of metacarpals of hand 
  • And a saddle joint of thumb - joint with thumb bone and carpal bones
    Movements Of Wrist -
  • Common wrist movements of daily activities called as Dart- thrower's arc. 
  • Flexion - bending hand down
  • Extension -raising the back of the hand
  • Supination - rotating palm up
  • pronation - rotating palm down
Causes OF Wrist Pain -
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common cause of wrist pain.
  • Arthritis is the another important cause of wrist pain. There is inflammation of the joint, with swelling and pain.
  • Trauma to wrist, while lifting some article or fall on wrist. 
  • Ganglion on wrist
  • Osteoarthritis with brittleness of bones.
  • Gout, with uric acid crystals deposition cause sever pain in the affected area.
  • Weightlifting or athletes, can experience tear of wrist joint ligaments and pain. 
  • Other common causes are sprain, tendonitis, etc.
Symptoms -
  • Stiffness of wrist movements
  • Holding objects may become painful and uncomfortable
  • Sounds when moving the wrist.
  • Pain of the joint varies according to severity and cause.
When to Contact Doctor? -
  • Most of the time pain can be relieved with some rest to joint and using warm applications. 
  • Contact your Doctor, when your finger movements are difficult, when you are unable to move wrist.
  • If swelling is not relieved by rest 
  • If there is tingling numbness to fingers or palm
